The two limits, and who gets which
- Standard route (5 years): 450 days of absence across the window, 90 in the final year — plus ILR held for at least 12 months before applying.
- Spouse of a British citizen (3 years): 270 days across the window, 90 in the final year, and no 12-month ILR wait. Set the application date and read your absence total against 270 instead.
- Normal discretion: up to 480 / 100 days is usually disregarded; beyond that, approval depends on showing your life is genuinely based in the UK.
